Our Wines

  • Joostenberg Bakermat

    2014

Bakermat, meaning “birth-place” or “cradle”, pays homage to Joostenberg, home of the Myburgh family for 6 generations. Every effort has been taken to ensure that this wine is a genuine expression of the Joostenberg terroir.

  • Joostenberg Cellar Select Noble Late Harvest

    2014

This wine has become one of our most popular and recognized wines and a huge amount of effort, both in the vineyard and the winery, is put into it every year. It is very dependent on weather conditions and this means that the volume produced and the characteristics of the wine vary greatly from year to year. This year, for the 1st time, we included a small portion of Semillon from a Stellenbosch vineyard. The Chenin Blanc portion of the wine is 81% and therefore the wine is not labeled as a Chenin Blanc.

  • Joostenberg “Die Agteros” Chenin Blanc

    2016

Our oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard was used to make this wine. It was planted in 1982 and for the first 20 years its fruit was sent to the local co-op and used for rather modest dry white blends. To be honest it’s an ugly, gnarly looking vineyard and year after year we contemplated its removal, but as soon as we started making our own wine on the farm we recognized its quality. We now care for this vineyard lovingly every year. The name is derived from the Afrikaans saying “die agteros kom ook in die kraal” (the hind ox also get’s there)…..the vineyard took a long time to prove itself and now it’s our favourite vineyard.

  • Joostenberg Fairhead

    2016

Every year we make a small batch of white wine named after Joostenberg’s current matriarch and gardener extraordinaire, Gillian Fairhead. This wine honours the women of Joostenberg whose substantial efforts, in a male dominated society, have often been unrecognized. The core of the wine is old vine Chenin Blanc and the blending partners are the more exotic Roussanne and Viognier varietals.

  • Joostenberg Syrah

    2012

This Syrah, from our own estate vineyards, is made using “traditional” techniques (partial whole-bunch fermentation, open topped fermentation tanks and maturation in used barrels). The aim is to produce a wine which displays varietal typicity and is true to its origin.

  • Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Cabernet Sauvignon

    2013

The Small Batch Collection wines are made in miniscule quantities and allow the winemaker and his team to explore various winemaking techniques, grape varietals and vineyards. Sometimes he likes to push the winemaking boundaries a bit (the revolutionary process) and sometimes it’s all about figuring out the results of small tweaks (the evolutionary process). This is the first release of Cabernet Sauvignon sourced exclusively from Joostenberg vineyards. It’s a classically styled Cabernet leaning towards the old world. Only 980 bottles were made.

    2014

The Small Batch Collection wines are made in miniscule quantities and allow us to explore various winemaking techniques, grape varietals and vineyards. Sometimes it’s about pushing the winemaking boundaries a bit (the revolutionary process) and sometimes it’s all about figuring out the best way to capture the pure essence of a specific vineyard. This is the first time we have bottled a Roussanne and we think it has good potential at Joostenberg.

  • Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Kaalgat Steen

    2015

The Small Batch Collection wines are made in miniscule quantities and allow us to explore various winemaking techniques, grape varietals and vineyards. Sometimes it’s about pushing the winemaking boundaries and sometimes it’s all about figuring out the best way to capture the pure essence of a specific vineyard. The lessons we learn when making these wines are applied to our general vineyard and winery strategies.

The Kaalgat Steen (meaning naked Chenin Blanc in Afrikaans) is the most “natural” expression of a single vineyard that we could come up with. Grapes were fermented with the skins intact and no additions, other than a small amount of SO2 prior to bottling, were made to the resulting wine.

This is the first release of Cabernet Sauvignon under this label and the grapes were sourced exclusively from Joostenberg vineyards. It’s a classically styled Cabernet Sauvignon leaning towards the old world.

The Spaanse Spek 2011 was inspired by Spanish white winemaking traditions which involve exceptionally long barrel-ageing periods (as long as 10 years in some cases). These wines are renowned for their ageing potential.

  • Joostenberg “Piano Man” Viognier

    2015

This “estate wine” is grown, made and bottled on Joostenberg. It is the first bottling of a varietal Viognier at Joostenberg. Only 2300 bottles were produced. It’s named after the current winemaker at Joostenberg, Micu Narunsky, who fell in love with wine while working as a jazz pianist in Bordeaux. He decided to follow his dream and swopped the music profession in order to take up the craft of winemaking.

A rich, but dry white wine with typical apricot and blossom aromas. The finish is slightly tannic (typical of Viognier) and this adds length to the wine.

In relatively warm climates, such as ours, it’s easy to make bold, full-bodied red wines, but there are times when a lighter, refreshing red wine makes the best drinking experience…..who doesn’t love to sip a good Pinot Noir every now and then?  This wine is all about these characteristics i.e. relatively low alcohol, soft tannins and a refreshing quality

  • Joostenberg Small Batch Collection Mourvedre

    2015

The Small Batch Collection wines are made in miniscule quantities and allow the winemaking team to
explore various winemaking techniques, grape varietals and vineyards. Sometimes we push the winemaking
boundaries a bit (the revolutionary process) and sometimes it’s all about figuring out the best way to
capture the pure essence of a specific vineyard. We have a small Mourvédre vineyard on Joostenberg and
we believe that the variety does well in our conditions. The 2015 vintage was especially good and a small
portion (along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Touriga Nacional) was included in our top estate blend
    i.e. Joostenberg Estate Bakermat 2015.
This is the 1st release of Mourvédre at Joostenberg. Only 288 bottles were made.
