Our oldest Chenin Blanc vineyard was used to make this wine. It was planted in 1982 and for the first 20 years its fruit was sent to the local co-op and used for rather modest dry white blends. To be honest it’s an ugly, gnarly looking vineyard and year after year we contemplated its removal, but as soon as we started making our own wine on the farm we recognized its quality. We now care for this vineyard lovingly every year. The name is derived from the Afrikaans saying “die agteros kom ook in die kraal” (the hind ox also gets there)…..the vineyard took a long time to prove itself and now it’s our favourite vineyard.

Every year we make a small batch of white wine named after Joostenberg’s current matriarch and gardener extraordinaire, Gillian Fairhead. This wine honours the women of Joostenberg whose substantial efforts, in a male dominated society, have often been unrecognized. The core of the wine is old vine Chenin Blanc and the blending partners are the more exotic Roussanne and Viognier varietals.
In relatively warm climates, such as ours, the grapes often don’t have very high acidity levels. We don’t like to add acid to our wines so we need to figure out other ways to do things. With this wine we simply picked the grapes super early (or green) in order to capture high natural acidity.

Bakermat, meaning “birth-place” or “cradle”, pays homage to Joostenberg, home of the Myburgh family for 6 generations. Every effort has been taken to ensure that this wine is a genuine expression of the Joostenberg terroir.
