OUR STORY

More than a century ago, our great-grandfather and his brother joined forces in a variety of farming ventures – from crops and livestock to winemaking. While admiring a certificate they earned at the 1904 Royal Cape Agricultural Show for Cinsault (then known as Hermitage), we found ourselves wondering what their wines might have tasted like. That moment of curiosity – mixed with a little nostalgia – inspired us to revive the Myburgh Bros. winemaking tradition.” – Tyrrel & Philip Myburgh

A RETURN TO HONEST WINEMAKING

The Myburgh Bros. wines are inspired by the simple, hands-on winemaking of the early 1900s – a time when craftsmanship and patience guided every decision. Working with old bush-vine vineyards on neighbouring farms, we aim to create wines that honour the past while celebrating the present.

Our family has been farming in the Muldersvlei area of Paarl since the mid-1800s. Today, we work with carefully chosen vineyards on nearby farms – Bakenrug, Hercules Pilaar, and Klipdam – where the soils, vines, and farmers each play their part. Though we don’t own these sites, we collaborate closely with the growers to ensure each vineyard’s character shines through in the wine.

At the heart of Myburgh Bros. is a simple philosophy: respect the land, the people and the grapes.

THE PIG ON THE LABEL

The pig illustration featured on every Myburgh Bros. bottle comes from an old black-and-white photo taken on Joostenberg after World War II.

It’s a nod both to the family’s pig farming days and to the down-to-earth humour that runs through the brand.

“Wine is more than a nostalgic journey – it should add pleasure, fun and joy to any occasion. That’s what Myburgh Bros. is all about.”

OUR WINES

EX-AFRICA MUSCAT D’ALEXANDRIE

Muscat D’Alexandrie, also known as Hanepoot, is one of the world’s oldest grape varieties, once cherished by the ancient Egyptians and widely planted across South Africa for generations. With only a few of these vineyards remaining today, we believe it’s a variety worth preserving. This wine shows a juicy mix of lychee, cantaloupe and pear, with a medium-bodied palate that’s fruity but never sweet. The finish is bone dry and refreshingly crisp, offering a modern take on a historic grape.

KAALGAT STEEN CHENIN BLANC

Since 2014 we’ve been making small batches of orange, or skin-macerated, white wine. Instead of pressing the grapes and fermenting only the juice, we treat this wine much like a red—fermenting it with the skins intact. This gives the wine a deeper colour and a gently grippy, tannin-like structure. We also add very little, if any, sulphur during the process, in a nod to the natural-wine movement.

LITTLE j RED BLEND

A juicy, medium-bodied red blend made primarily from Cinsault and Syrah, with small additions of Grenache Noir and Mourvèdre in certain vintages. We bottle this wine intentionally young to preserve the bright, refreshing character that makes it so appealing.

OLD VINE CHENIN BLANC

Made from heritage vineyards (35 years and older) on neighbouring farms to Joostenberg. This is a fresh, vibrant style of Chenin Blanc, fermented with wild yeast in stainless steel tanks. It opens with aromas of apple, pear and melon, which become more expressive with a bit of bottle age. Over time, the palate broadens and develops the juicy, textured mouthfeel that Chenin is so well known for.
