Joostenberg Wine Estate
Our Story
At Joostenberg Wine Estate, we believe that great wines begin in the vineyard. By farming organically and keeping things simple in the cellar, we aim to craft wines that are honest, expressive, and true to their origin. For us, winemaking is a journey rather than a destination – one that requires patience, curiosity, and perseverance to capture the soul of our land in every bottle.
We also believe that responsible farming goes hand in hand with quality. Every action we take in the vineyard or cellar is carefully considered, with the goal of minimising our impact on the environment and reducing reliance on non-renewable resources. Can the grazing of livestock in vineyards improve soil fertility and reduce tractor use? Does an aluminium or plastic capsule really add anything to wine quality? These are the kinds of questions that guide our daily decisions.
Organic Vineyards
While Chenin Blanc and Syrah remain our main focus, we continue to explore a range of varieties – Roussanne, Verdelho, Alvarinho, Petit Manseng, Mourvèdre, Grenache Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pontac – each planted in the spirit of discovery, as we slowly uncover what best suits our site.
Our Wines
At Joostenberg Wine Estate, winemaking is guided by a respect for our land, our heritage, and the people who care for it. All our vineyards are farmed organically, and each wine is made with minimal intervention to ensure it reflects its origin. From heritage Chenin Blanc to Syrah, blends and special releases, our wines are crafted to be both authentic and delicious.
Whether you’re discovering Joostenberg for the first time or revisiting an old favourite, we invite you to explore our range. Each bottle tells a story of place, family and tradition, and we’re proud to share them with you.
Bakermat
The flagship red blend made from the finest vineyards on the estate. Named after the Dutch word for “birthplace” and a tribute to the Myburgh family who have lived and farmed on Joostenberg for five generations. Medium to full-bodied with fine tannins and the structure to age gracefully.
Chenin Blanc
There is more Chenin Blanc in South Africa than in its original home, France, and many people are of the view that it makes South Africa’s best white wines. Joostenberg also has a long history of growing Chenin Blanc and a big focus is put into it. This is one of two Chenin bottlings made on the estate and is a blend of several vineyards.
Chenin Blanc Noble Late Harvest
This wine has become one of our most popular and recognized wines and a huge amount of effort, both in the vineyard and the winery, is put into it every year. It is very dependent on weather conditions and this means that the volume produced and the characteristics of the wine vary greatly from year to year.
Die Agteros Chenin Blanc
Made from the oldest vineyard on the estate. A sophisticated and nuanced Chenin Blanc with great ageing potential. The grapes from this vineyard were once sold to other wineries and ended up in modest blends. As the vineyard grew older it’s quiet brilliance was realized and it has become the most cherished vineyard on the property. Named after an Afrikaans saying “Agteros kom ook in die kraal” which figuratively means “patience and diligence pays off in the end”.
Fairhead
Every year we make a small batch of white wine named after former Myburgh family matriarch and gardener extraordinaire, Gillian Fairhead. This wine honours the women of Joostenberg whose substantial efforts, in a male dominated society, have often been unrecognized. The core of the wine is Chenin Blanc and Roussanne. Smaller components of Alvarinho, Viognier, Verdelho and Petit Manseng are also included depending on the vintage.
Family Blend
Syrah is particularly well-suited to the farm and this is one of several bottlings in which it plays a significant role. Mourvédre, Grenache Noir and Touriga Nacional are the blending partners. This wine has become integral to family gatherings at Joostenberg over the years, hence the name Family Blend.
Klippe Kou Syrah
Our best Syrah is grown in our rockiest soil. Syrah loves rocks! In Afrikaans “Klippe Kou” means “chewing rocks”, which is what the roots of the vines need to do in these rocky soils. This is a bottling of the finest Syrah on the property.
NIU Chenin Blanc Methode Cap Classique
This sparkling wine is a result of a collaboration with the Pujol-Busquets family, from Alta Alella Mirgin Winery near Barcelona. A refreshing, bone-dry sparkling wine. Aromas and flavours of fresh green apples and baked apple crumble.
Philip Albert Cabernet Sauvignon
The first Myburgh to farm at Joostenberg was Philipus Albertus Myburgh and 5-generations later his off-spring are still tilling the soil and acting as custodians of this little patch of earth. This is a classically styled Cabernet that is aged in small French oak barrels. Beautiful aromas and flavours of cedar, black currant and a touch of tobacco. In some vintages a dash of Merlot is added.
Song of the Soil Rosé
Made from Mourvèdre and Syrah – grape varieties renowned for producing some of the world’s finest rosé – this wine is crafted in a refined, sophisticated style that reflects both place and purpose. Delicious and refreshing.

Musings from the winemaker: Syrah vs Shiraz
Wine can be a very serious, intellectual thing even if it’s main function is to quench thirst, taste damn fine and act as a social lubricant. I’m more than happy to partake in high-brow wine conversations if the time is right but I’m also more than happy to just enjoy...
Just Another Manic Spring Day
While I wouldn’t say winter on the farm is quiet, it does seem as if there is more time available to get things done. The main winter activity is pruning and if this is delayed by a few days here and there due to rain or another task that is prioritized we always seem...
